The why
Nothing tells you how many fields you have left empty
eBay matches a buyer’s filters against structured fields, not against your prose. The fields most often missing are the ones doing that work.
Item specifics decide whether a listing is eligible to appear
Brand, MPN, Size, Colour, Type. When a buyer narrows a category down with the left-hand filters, a listing with the field empty is not in the running - however good the description is.
Knowing is not the same as fixing
eBay’s own Listings Quality Report will tell you which listings have missing item specifics or item attributes, and it is a genuinely useful report. It is also a download: to act on it you go back to eBay and work listing by listing.

A product you know sells. Good photographs, an honest description, a fair price. It has been live for two years and it does almost nothing.
Nothing about it is wrong. It is simply not eligible for the searches that would find it, because the Brand field is empty and the buyer narrowed the category by brand before they ever saw a listing.
You would not find that by looking at the listing. It looks fine. You find it by scanning the catalogue for one missing item attribute and discovering that eighteen hundred listings have the same one.
An empty item specific never flags anywhere. It just sits there being empty.
