eBay UK Selling Fees Explained (2026)
eBay.co.uk charges two core fees on every sale, plus optional extras. Here is what each one means and how it is calculated.
1. Final Value Fee (FVF) – UK
The final value fee is eBay's main commission. It is charged as a percentage of the total amount the buyer pays — that is the item price plus postage. The rate depends on whether you are a private or business seller, and which category you are selling in.
Private sellers (eBay.co.uk):
- 12.8% on the total sale up to £5,000
- 3% on the portion above £5,000
- Plus a fixed £0.30 per order fee
- No maximum fee cap
Business sellers (eBay.co.uk) — fee by category:
| Category | FVF Rate (excl. VAT) | FVF Rate (incl. 20% VAT) |
|---|---|---|
| Most categories | 10.9% | ~13.1% |
| Clothes, Shoes & Accessories | 12.9% | ~15.5% |
| Electronics & Computers | 11.9% | ~14.3% |
| Books, Music, DVDs | 9.9% | ~11.9% |
| Business, Office & Industrial | 8.9% | ~10.7% |
| Cars, Motorcycles & Vehicles | 6.9% | ~8.3% |
| Motors Parts & Accessories | 8.9% | ~10.7% |
Business sellers also pay 20% VAT on top of the FVF. If your business is VAT-registered you can reclaim this, but it still affects cash flow. There is a maximum final value fee cap of £250 per item for business sellers.
Top Rated Sellers receive a 10% discount on the variable FVF (not on the £0.30 fixed fee). To qualify you need a defect rate below 0.5%, late shipments below 3%, and cases closed without resolution below 0.3%.
2. Insertion Fee – UK
eBay gives all UK sellers 1,000 free listings per month (as of 2024). Once you exceed this, insertion fees of £0.35 per listing apply. Most casual and mid-volume sellers will never hit this threshold.
3. Regulatory Operating Fee – UK
Since 2024, eBay charges a small regulatory operating fee on UK sales. This covers eBay's compliance costs and applies as a percentage of the total sale amount. It is small but worth including in your margin calculations.
4. International Fee – UK
If your buyer is based outside the UK, eBay charges an additional international fee of around 1.65% of the total sale. This applies when you list on eBay.co.uk but ship abroad.
eBay UK Fee Example
You sell a pair of trainers for £65 with £4.99 postage. You are a business seller in Clothes, Shoes & Accessories (10.9% excluding VAT, so ~13.1% including VAT).
| Fee Type | Calculation | Amount |
|---|---|---|
| Total sale | £65 + £4.99 | £69.99 |
| FVF (10.9% + 20% VAT) | £69.99 × 13.1% | £9.17 |
| Fixed per-order fee | + | £0.30 |
| Total eBay fees | £9.47 | |
| Your payout (before costs) | £69.99 – £9.47 | £60.52 |
eBay US Selling Fees Explained (2026)
eBay.com updated its fee structure in early 2025. Final value fees increased by up to 0.35% in most categories. Here is what US sellers pay today.
1. Final Value Fee (FVF) – US
eBay US charges a final value fee on the total amount of the sale — item price plus buyer-paid shipping. The base rate for most sellers without a Store (or with a Starter Store) is 13.25% on the portion up to $7,500, then 2.35% on anything above that.
| Category | No Store / Starter | Basic Store & Above |
|---|---|---|
| Most categories (general rate) | 13.25% | 12.35% |
| Books, DVDs, Music | 14.95% | 13.25% |
| Clothing & Accessories | 13.25% | 12.35% |
| Electronics | 13.25% | 12.35% |
| Collectibles & Fine Art | 15.0% | 14.0% |
| Guitars & Basses | 6.35% | 5.85% |
| Motor Vehicles | Flat $60–$300 | Flat $60–$300 |
| Motors: Parts & Accessories | ~9–10% | ~8–9% |
| Real Estate | Flat fee | Flat fee |
In addition, eBay charges a per-order fee: $0.40 per order for sales over $10, and $0.30 for sales of $10 or under.
Top Rated Plus sellers receive a 10% discount on the variable FVF for qualifying listings.
2. Insertion Fee – US
All US sellers (no Store) receive 250 free fixed-price listings per month. After that, insertion fees of $0.35 apply per listing. Store subscribers get significantly more (250 to 100,000 depending on tier).
3. eBay US Fee Example
You sell a jacket for $80 with $9.99 buyer-paid shipping on a standard (no Store) account.
| Fee Type | Calculation | Amount |
|---|---|---|
| Total sale | $80 + $9.99 | $89.99 |
| FVF (13.25%) | $89.99 × 13.25% | $11.92 |
| Per-order fee | $0.40 (sale over $10) | $0.40 |
| Total eBay fees | $12.32 | |
| Your payout (before costs) | $89.99 – $12.32 | $77.67 |
eBay Store Subscriptions: Which Tier is Worth It?
An eBay Store subscription gives you more free listings, lower final value fees, and access to promotional tools. Whether it is worth it depends entirely on your monthly sales volume.
eBay US Store Subscription Costs (2026)
| Store Tier | Annual Price | Monthly (no contract) | Free Listings | FVF (most categories) |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| None | Free | Free | 250 | 13.25% |
| Starter | $4.95/mo | $7.95/mo | 250 | 13.25% (no discount) |
| Basic | $21.95/mo | $27.95/mo | 1,000 | 12.35% |
| Premium | $59.95/mo | $74.95/mo | 10,000 | 12.35% |
| Anchor | $299.95/mo | $349.95/mo | 25,000 | 12.35% |
| Enterprise | $2,999.95/mo | – | 100,000 | 12.35% |
eBay UK Shop Subscription Costs (2026)
| Shop Tier | Monthly (annual) | Monthly (no contract) | Zero Insertion Listings |
|---|---|---|---|
| Basic Shop | ~£25/mo | ~£30/mo | Additional 200 |
| Featured Shop | ~£35/mo | ~£45/mo | Additional 1,500 |
| Anchor Shop | ~£399/mo | – | Additional 10,000 |
UK Shop subscriptions provide more free listings and access to eBay's promotional tools. Unlike the US, UK Shop subscriptions do not reduce final value fees — the saving is primarily through listing credits and branding features.
eBay Promoted Listings Fees
Promoted Listings Standard is eBay's main advertising product. You set a rate (a percentage of sale price), and only pay when a buyer clicks your promoted listing and purchases within 30 days. There is no upfront cost.
- Minimum rate: Usually 2–3% in most categories
- Suggested rate: eBay shows a suggested rate in Seller Hub; using a rate above this improves placement
- When it's charged: Only on completed sales that originated from the promoted listing click
- Maximum effective cost: FVF + promoted listing rate can reach 20–25%+ in some categories if you are not careful
7 Ways to Reduce Your eBay Selling Fees
- Achieve Top Rated Seller status. The 10% FVF discount is the single biggest fee reduction available to individual sellers on both eBay UK and eBay US. Focus on dispatch time, defect rates, and communication to qualify.
- Use the right Store tier. If you sell consistently above the break-even threshold, upgrading to Basic (US) can save hundreds per year. Run the numbers before committing to a higher tier.
- Watch your promoted listing rates. Only run Promoted Listings on items with sufficient margin. Avoid using the default suggested rate on low-margin items — it can eliminate your profit entirely.
- Optimise listings to avoid insertion fees. Manage your Good 'Til Cancelled listings carefully. Every GTC listing that renews counts against your monthly free allowance. Remove stale listings that are not selling.
- Price shipping accurately. eBay's final value fee applies to the total amount the buyer pays — including postage. If you overcharge for shipping, you pay a higher FVF on the inflated shipping amount, too.
- Use eBay's free listing promotions. eBay periodically offers free insertion credits in Seller Hub. Check your promotional offers regularly and time new listings around these windows.
- Consider your listing category carefully. Final value fees vary significantly between categories. Ensure your item is listed in the most accurate and cost-effective category. Misclassifying items to get a lower FVF risks listing removal.

eBay Fees FAQ
For UK private sellers, eBay charges 12.8% of the total sale (item + postage) up to £5,000, plus £0.30 per order. Business sellers pay 6.9%–12.9% + 20% VAT depending on category, plus £0.30. Most UK sellers pay an effective rate of around 11–14% all in.
For US sellers without a Store, eBay charges 13.25% of the total sale amount (item price + buyer-paid shipping) for most categories, plus $0.40 per order. With a Basic Store subscription and above, this drops to 12.35%. Some categories charge up to 15%.
Yes. eBay calculates the final value fee on the total amount the buyer pays, which includes whatever shipping charge you set. If the buyer pays £10 for shipping, eBay takes its percentage cut from that £10 as well. This is why undercharging for shipping can hurt your margin — and overcharging increases your fees.
The final value fee (FVF) is eBay's main selling commission, charged as a percentage of the total sale. In the UK, the standard rate is 10.9% + 20% VAT for business sellers in most categories. In the US, it is 13.25% for most categories (no Store) or 12.35% (Basic Store and above). The FVF replaced the old PayPal + eBay fee structure — it now includes payment processing.
No. Since eBay migrated to Managed Payments, there is no separate PayPal fee for most sellers. Payment processing is included within the final value fee. You will not see a separate PayPal charge on your monthly invoice.
An insertion fee is charged when you list an item and have exceeded your free monthly listing allowance. UK sellers currently receive 1,000 free listings per month (private and business). US sellers without a Store receive 250 free listings. After these limits, eBay charges £0.35 (UK) or $0.35 (US) per listing regardless of whether the item sells.
Stay within your free monthly listing allowance. Manage Good 'Til Cancelled listings and remove items that are not selling. For high-volume sellers, upgrading to a Store subscription significantly increases your free listing allowance — the Basic Store (US) gives 1,000 free listings per month.
For US sellers, a Basic Store ($21.95/month annual) pays for itself at roughly $2,440 in monthly sales due to the 0.9% FVF discount. For UK sellers, Shop subscriptions are more valuable for high-volume listers who need extra free insertion credits. Run your own numbers using the calculator above before committing.
eBay introduced a regulatory operating fee in 2024 for sellers in the UK and certain European markets. It is a small additional percentage of the total sale that covers eBay's costs for complying with marketplace legislation. It is applied automatically and appears on your monthly invoice.
For a UK business seller in most categories (10.9% + 20% VAT = ~13.1%), eBay takes approximately £13.40 on a £100 sale (£13.10 FVF + £0.30 transaction fee). A private seller at 12.8% would pay £13.10 FVF + £0.30, totalling £13.40. On a US sale of $100, at 13.25% + $0.40 per order, eBay takes approximately $13.65.
