The short answer
MPN on eBay means Manufacturer Part Number: the code a manufacturer gives a specific product or part. You add it in your listing’s item specifics, usually next to Brand. If the item genuinely has no MPN, choose “Does not apply”.
If you list branded products on eBay, especially electronics, appliances or car parts, you will see a field called MPN. This guide explains what MPN means on eBay, where to find the number, where to enter it, and what to do when your item does not have one.
What does MPN mean on eBay?
MPN stands for Manufacturer Part Number. It is the code a manufacturer gives one specific product or part so it can be told apart from similar models. Two drills from the same brand might look almost identical, but each has its own MPN.
On eBay, the MPN is one of the eBay item specifics: the structured fields attached to a listing. Because different manufacturers can use similar numbers, eBay reads the MPN together with Brand.
Where to find the MPN
- On the product or its label. Often marked “MPN”, “Part No.”, “P/N” or “Model No.”
- On the packaging or in the manual.
- On the manufacturer’s website, on the product’s own page or spec sheet.
- In eBay’s catalogue. When you match your item to an eBay catalogue product, the MPN is often filled in for you.
Where to enter the MPN on an eBay listing
When you create or revise a listing, the MPN goes in the item specifics section, normally next to Brand. In many categories eBay groups it with the other product identifiers, such as UPC or EAN.
If you need to add MPNs to lots of live listings at once, eBay Bulk Revision sets item specifics across thousands of listings without relisting them.
MPN vs UPC, EAN, ISBN, ePID and SKU
These numbers do different jobs, and mixing them up is one of the most common listing mistakes.
| Identifier | What it is | Who sets it |
|---|---|---|
| MPN | Manufacturer Part Number: identifies the product or part, used with Brand | The manufacturer |
| UPC | Barcode number used mainly in the US (a type of GTIN) | GS1 / the brand |
| EAN | Barcode number used in the UK and Europe (a type of GTIN) | GS1 / the brand |
| ISBN | Book identifier | The publisher |
| ePID | eBay’s own catalogue product ID | eBay |
| SKU | Your own stock code. Never put it in the MPN field | You |
What if your item doesn’t have an MPN? Use “Does not apply”
If a product genuinely has no manufacturer part number, enter “Does not apply” in the MPN field. That is the right choice for:
- Handmade or one-off items
- Unbranded or generic products
- Custom bundles or kits you have put together yourself
- Very old items made before part numbers were used
If the product does have an MPN, use the real number. “Does not apply” on a branded product that has one means eBay cannot match your listing to it.
Why the MPN matters
It matches your listing to the right product
eBay uses Brand and MPN to connect your listing with its product catalogue, so it can show your item alongside the right product details.
Buyers search by part number
In categories like car parts, electronics and spares, buyers often search for the exact part number. A correct MPN lets your listing come up for those searches.
Fewer returns and questions
A precise identifier helps buyers confirm they are getting the right part before they buy, which means fewer “wrong item” returns and fewer messages asking which version it is.
Common MPN mistakes to avoid
- Putting your SKU in the MPN field. Your stock code is not the manufacturer’s part number.
- Typing errors. One wrong character and the number matches nothing. Copy it from the label or the manufacturer’s site.
- The wrong Brand. An MPN only means something next to the right brand.
- “Does not apply” on a branded product that has an MPN.
- Leaving it blank. A blank MPN looks the same as one that does not exist.

MPN on eBay: questions sellers ask
What is MPN on eBay?
MPN stands for Manufacturer Part Number. It is the code a manufacturer gives a specific product or part, and on eBay it is one of the item specifics you can add to a listing, usually alongside Brand. eBay uses it to match your listing to the right product and to the searches buyers make with that number.
Where do I enter the MPN on an eBay listing?
In the item specifics section of the listing form, normally next to Brand. In many categories eBay lists it with the other product identifiers, such as UPC or EAN.
What if my item doesn’t have an MPN?
Use “Does not apply”. It is the right choice for handmade, unbranded, custom or bundled items that genuinely have no manufacturer part number. If the product does have one, enter the real number instead.
Is MPN the same as UPC, EAN or SKU?
No. The MPN comes from the manufacturer and identifies the product. UPC and EAN are barcode numbers, both types of GTIN. A SKU is your own stock code, so it should never go in the MPN field.
Do I need an MPN to sell on eBay?
Not always. Some categories ask for Brand and MPN, and many recommend them. Where a real MPN exists, adding it helps eBay match your listing to the product buyers are searching for.
