eBay has reversed its global ban on selling CBD (Cannabidiol) products on the UK marketplace for approved sellers.

The growing CBD market in the UK was worth a staggering £690million in 2021, with demand for CBD products soaring during the lockdown. The UK is now the second-largest global market for CBD products, and eBay clearly sees an opportunity in the highly regulated industry.

Approved business sellers only

Sellers will need to apply to sell CBD products.

To sell in the gated CBD category, retailers must be registered business sellers on eBay and comply with UK laws and the marketplace’s rules and policies relating to cosmetics, food, and illegal drugs and drug paraphernalia.

The CBD category is not currently available to private sellers. As a result, any un-approved sellers (including business sellers) listing CBD products risk their eBay accounts being sanctioned and potentially having their selling privileges removed.

A statement on eBay’s customer services pages relating to CBD sales on the platform says:

CBD products that comply with all applicable legal requirements may only be sold by permitted sellers only.

Activity that doesn’t follow eBay policy could result in a range of actions, including for example: administratively ending or cancelling listings, hiding or demoting all listings from search results, lowering seller rating, buying or selling restrictions, and account suspension. All fees paid or payable in relation to listings or accounts on which we take any action will not be refunded or otherwise credited to your account.
